Edward J. Murtaugh

Edward J. Murtaugh, Attorney, died at home on January 3rd in Portsmouth, RI at age 92.Edward was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on April 5, 1921. He was the son of the late John and Mary (Immekus) Murtaugh. He leaves his beloved wife, Claire DeBlois-Murtaugh and was the husband of the late Eleanor (Mahoney) Murtaugh. He was predeceased by his son, Michael T. Murtaugh and his daughter, Kathleen M. Murtaugh. Ed was also predeceased by his three sisters, Mary Key, Margaret Murtaugh and Ann Kuehn, all of Poughkeepsie, NY, and is survived by his brother-in-law, Thomas Mahoney and his wife Sue of Nyack, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews. He leaves three step-daughters, Denise Roncarati, Jo-Anne Nolette and Michelle Purdy, and their spouses, and five step-sons, Charles, David, William, Thomas and James DeBlois, and their spouses. He also leaves 21 step-grandchildren.Edward graduated from the University of Penn Wharton School in 1942 and Harvard Law School in 1949. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Boreas, a supply ship, and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. After graduating from law school, Ed worked in New York City as a law clerk under Judge Goddard during the Alger Hiss Trial. Edward then practiced law in Poughkeepsie, NY for over 50 years. After his retirement, he then moved to RI in 1992.Ed had an inquisitive mind, was an avid reader, loved his horses, spent August in Saratoga, and was a world traveler. He lived his life to the fullest. Edward was a former member of the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club and Wanumetonomy Golf and C.C., and was an active member in the Poughkeepsie community.Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.Burial will be private.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Kathleen M.
