Edward Joseph Walsh, Jr., 91, of Newport, RI died on Monday, November 12, 2012 at John Clarke Health Care Center in Middletown, RI. He was the husband of the late Norma C. (Kelly) Walsh.Born May 3, 1921 in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Edward J. Walsh, Sr. and Mary Edith (Manning) Walsh.Mr. Walsh served in the United States Navy in the Atlantic Theatre, the European-African Theatre, and Pacific Theatre during World War II and was also a Korean War Veteran. He was involved in 26 Anti Sub Patrols in the Atlantic 1942, Amphibious Landings in Philippines and Okinawa, occupation of Japan September 1945. He retired after 23 years at the rank of Master Chief Boatswains Mate. He was a 1938 graduate of Weymouth High School. Mr. Walsh boxed in New England and in the Navy. He coached Navy Boxing Teams including Navy 1959 Pan Am Games Team and Navy 1960 Olympic Team. He served in USSPC 474-PCS1426-USSLSM244; flag allowances of COM NAV DIST ONE and COMDESLANT, USS Okaloosa;APA219; USS Diamond Head; AE19; USS Saratoga CVAGO Special Boat Unit 2 LANTFLT, Officer-in-Charge LCU1612;CMAA Naval Underwater Ordinance Station, Military Guard Division Officer, Naval Station Newport, USS Kawishiwi A0146, Pacific Fleet. Mr. Walsh was a 1938 graduate of Weymouth High School. He was a board member of the Newport Council Navy League of US, a past board member Rhode Island Grand Opera, VFW Middletown Post 4487, Fleet Reserve Branch 19 Newport, Newport Lodge of Elks#114, US Naval Institute, US Naval War College Foundation, USS Saratoga Advisory Member, Patrol Craft Sailors Association, Tin Can Sailors Association, ACU/LCU/LSU/LCT Sailors Association, LSM/LSMR Association, and a charter member World War II Memorial.He is survived by his children, Mark Christopher Walsh and daughter-in-law, Nina Walsh of Coventry, RI and Patricia Ellen Womak of Dunwoody, GA; his brother, Robert S. Walsh of Hanover, MA; and his best friend, Joyce Przystrezelski. He was the father of the late Carol Anne Williams. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 from 3:00-6:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. His funeral service will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012, at 9:00 am, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
