Newport, RI - Edwin F. McDonnell, Ret. USN, 83, of Bellevue Ave Newport, formerly of East Bowery Street, Newport, died Sunday, January 1, 2006 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Angela Ferrazzoli McDonnell. Born in Atlantic City, NJ on September 14, 1922, he was the son of the late Edwin V. McDonnell and the late Helen Weiss McDonnell.Mr. McDonnell was a retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer. He served 20 years in the Navy, including several years in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was onboard the USS Missouri as a member of the Honor Guard during the signing of the treaty to end the war with Japan. After his retirement in 1961, he went back to school at NE Tech and began working at Raytheon Corp. and later the US Post Office in Providence. Edwin was a member of the Fleet Reserve and the Newport Knights of Columbus. He is survived by two sons, Edwin D. McDonnell of Newport, RI, and Steven McDonnell, Ret. USMC and his wife Anna of Kuwait, and three daughters Stella Vrablic and her husband Frank of Wanchese, NC, Angela T. Oaklund and her husband Carl of North Kingstown, RI, and Linda Magill of Roswell, NM, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a brother Phillip McDonnell and a sister Helen McDonnell.His funeral will be held on Friday, January 6, 2006, at 11:00 AM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial with military honors will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Donations may be made in his memory to Heatherwood Nursing Home Activity Fund, 398 Bellevue Ave, Newport, RI 02840.
