PORTSMOUTH, RI - Elaine M. Tobben, 62, of Silva Avenue, Portsmouth, died August 15, 2007 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. She was the wife of Anthony G. Tobben for 45 years. Born in Malden, MA on October 10, 1944, she spent many years in her youth living in Culver City, California. Married on October 22, 1962, Elaine was a devoted Navy wife and mother. They lived in their home in Portsmouth since 1978, and she volunteered countless hours both in the VFW Auxiliary and for the RI Veterans Home. She was a Life Member of the Capt. Kenneth L. Gilbert Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 4487 in Middletown, RI and was currently serving as the Treasurer. Elaine was Past President of the VFW Auxiliary District 2. Through the VFW, Elaine and her husband organized the Bingo nights for many years. Mrs. Tobben was also the VFW Chairperson at the Bristol Veterans Home, where she ran Bingos and activities for the residents. Mrs. Tobben is survived by her husband Anthony, her daughters Helena Soares and her husband Eric of Middletown, RI, Theresa Tobben of Portsmouth, Carolyn Tobben and her fiance Michael Tuttle of Westborough, MA, and Cindy Tobben of Lancaster, PA. She also leaves two brothers, Joseph Oliver and his wife Lottie of Laughlin, NV and Clifford Ames and his wife Debbie of Gardenia, CA and two grandchildren Melissa Castle and Dustin Soares, as well as two great grandchildren DJ and Marquies Bailey; and her dear friend Grace Homen of Newport.Calling hours will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2007 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. A prayer service will be held at 2:00PM.
