Elaine Ruth Ohlsen, 85, formerly of Providence, RI died Thursday, December 6, 2007 in Newport, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter, Miki Ohlsen and her son-in-law, John Carr.Born in New York City on December 3, 1922 an identitical twin, she grew up in Bohemia, NY and was the daughter of the late William Francis Ruth and Ruth Wilkinson Ruth.Always a care-giver, Elaine earned her RN from St. Vincent?s Hospital in New York and worked as a nurse her entire life. Along with her twin sister, Gladys, they served as US Army 2nd Lieutenants during WWII in the Nurse Corps stationed in the Marianas Islands. They received the WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.Elaine worked for the Providence School Department as a School Nurse Teacher for 35 years, retiring in 1991 and worked for many years at Camp Yawgoo as the Camp Nurse. She will be dearly missed by all the people whose lives she touched. In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by her son, Bill Ohlsen and daughter-in-law Wendy of Pembroke Pines Florida, three grandchildren, Wilkes Carr, Noah Ohlsen and Jennifer Ohlsen, her sister, Arline Ruth Kiven, and many loving nieces and nephews.She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Joseph Ohlsen, her son, William Mark Ohlsen, her twin sister, Gladys Ruth Kanter, and her companion of many years, Harry Limer.Funeral services will be held Monday, December 10, 2007 at 11 am in Channing Memorial Church, 135 Pelham Street, Newport.Burial with military honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Wampanoag Trail, East Providence, RIVisiting hours will be held Sunday, December 9, 2007 from 5-8 pm in Hambly Funeral Home, ?Brick House?, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport.In lieu of flowers, donations in Elaine?s memory may be made to Home Hospice Care of RI, 169 George Street, Pawtucket, RI 02840.
