Elbert J. Passman Middletown, RI - Elbert J. Passman, 83, of 14 Reardon Drive, Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Mary Charlotte Brindle Passman. Born in Winser, LA on July 5, 1925, he was the son of the late Albert Marshall and Verda Pippins Passman. Mr. Passman served in the United States Navy during WWII. While in the Navy, he served in both the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign and the Phillipine Liberation Campaign, retiring in 1966 after 22 years. Mr. Passman received his Associates degree in 1976 from Johnson and Wales. After his retirement from the Navy, he owned the former Bellevue News for 7 years and also worked at the Naval Underwater Systems Center as a computer librarian and Stop and Shop. Mr. Passman was a member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus and the Fleet Reserve. He was an avid gardener, loved to bowl, and was a member of several leagues in the area. He loved his family and took pride in their accomplishments. He taught his family the spirit of generosity and the value of hard work. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his son Kenneth P. Passman of Middletown, RI, his daughters Donna A. Passman of Middletown, RI and Mary K. Coppola of Coventry, RI, his brother Marshall Lee Passman of Sicily Island, LA and his grandchildren Leslie Roberts and Scott Roberts, Jeffrey Coppola and Pamela DiMartino.He was the father of the late Elbert Julian Passman, Jr., and the brother of the late James Alvin James Passman, William Benjamin Passman, and Jesse Ray Passman, and Margie Zuskar. His funeral will be held on Monday, September 29, 2008, at 8:00 am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am, in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours are omitted.
