Eleanor L. Calcagno

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Eleanor Louise (Cavanaugh) Calcagno, 86, of Middletown, RI, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at John Clarke Health Care Center Middletown, RI. Born in New Bedford, MA on July 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Louis H. and Helen E. (Ousey) Cavanaugh and was also the stepdaughter of Charles S. Ritchie Jr. A 1944 graduate of Rogers High School, she received her Library Certification at the U.R.I. Extension. Eleanor worked as a cataloger in the Naval Underwater Systems Center until her retirement in 1987. She was an active member and past president of the Aquidneck Business and Professional Women's Club, the Federation of Business and Professional Women, and served on that organizations National Foundation Committee. Eleanor was also a member and past president of the Newport Outdoor Art Festival, member of the Newport Art Museum, Friends of the Middletown Library, the Portsmouth Library and Friends of Whitehall. Upon retiring she volunteered in the Meals on Wheels Program, Lucys Hearth, and St. Lucys Church office. Eleanor also served as Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Church Finance Committee. For many years she was an active member of St. Lucy's Small Christian Community, One Ohana. Surviving are daughter, Deb Barley, wife of Rick, and two sons, Paul, husband of Marianne, John, Husband of Karen Stuhldreher, eight grandchildren, Lori, Sara, Rick, Lisa, David, Maggie, Emma and Riley. She was affectionately known as "GiGi" to her seven great grandchildren, Brianna, Nicholas, Jordan, Jonah, Nora, Phoebe, and Liam. Peter her eldest son passed away in 2012. Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013, from 4-6 with a service at 6 in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
