Elizabeth Ann Anderson

Elizabeth Macy Anderson, 82, of Middletown, died Thursday, July 18, 2013 in Newport, RI. Born in Del Norte, CO on December 21, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Murray Hammond Macy and Esther Maude (Boyd) Macy. Elizabeth "Liz" Anderson, a direct descendent of the first settlers of Nantucket, MA, was born and raised on a farm in Colorado. She attended the University of Colorado and began a career as a secretary in San Francisco, CA. She joined the U.S. Foreign Service with assignments in U.S. Embassies in Argentina, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, and Greece. After a round the world courtship, she and Richard Anderson married 51 years ago in Naugatuck, CT. They honeymooned on Nantucket, and soon moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their life together took them to Newport, Guam, around the country and back overseas to Portugal. Upon her husbands retirement, they settled in Middletown, RI. She became a member of the United Congregational Church, where she served on many committees and was always an active volunteer. She also worked for several years at Hodges Badge Co. Elizabeth was a member of the Naval War College Wives' Club, and sponsored many foreign students attending the War College. She was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International and hosted visitors with many exchange programs. For many years, she also enjoyed time on Nantucket and attending services at the First Congregational Church of Nantucket. She is survived by her husband CDR Richard W. Anderson, USN (Ret.) of Middletown, RI, two daughters Alexandra Ellen Anderson DeAngelo of Tiverton, RI, and Tania Elizabeth Anderson Lewis of Nokesville, VA, three granddaughters Catherine DeAngelo, Emily Macy Lewis, and Ava Marie Lewis, and her sister Margaret "Pegg" Ellen Macy of Albuquerque, NM,.A memorial service will be held on Sunday August 4 at 11:30am at the United Congregational Church, Middletown, with burial in the Memorial Garden to follow. Another memorial service will be at the First Congregational Church of Nantucket, on July 28.Memorial donations may be made to either United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or the First Congregational Church of Nantucket, 62 Centre Street, Nantucket, MA 06670.
