PORTSMOUTH - Elizabeth G. Briggs, 87, of Portsmouth, RI died Wednesday October 14, 2015 at Charlton Memorial Hospital surrounded by family after a brief illness. Born September 6, 1928 in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Jack P. and Phoebe (Anthony) Garforth.She is survived by her husband Ernest L. Briggs of 64 years and her brother Jack Garforth, Jr. She leaves her children: Deborah and husband Dennis Gustafson, her son Stuart and wife Maureen Briggs, son Benjamin and wife Cynthia Briggs and son Byron and his wife Karen Briggs. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren, Paul, Nicholas and Rebecca Briggs; David Gustafson and Denae Vetterick, Caitlin and Tyler Briggs; and Noelle, Thomas and Alexander Briggs as well as 8 great-grandchildren. She was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, RI. After her marriage to Ernest in 1951, she did the bookkeeping for the numerous family businesses while raising her family. From the time of her own childhood until her own daughter was raised, she was very active in Girl Scouts. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth. Knitting and spending quality time with her family was what she enjoyed most.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 2-5 p.m. in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department, 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
