Portsmouth, RI - Elizabeth McQuaid Arnold, 94, a retired Navy Lt. Commander, of Aquidneck Place, Portsmouth, formerly of 35 Sherman Street, Portsmouth, died Sunday, February 29, 2004 at Rhode Island Hospital Providence, RI.She was the wife of the late Edgar R. Arnold. Born in Newport, RI on October 18, 1909, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Lilla Mauler McQuaid. Mrs. Arnold was a 1928 graduate of Rogers High School and a 1931 graduate of the Newport Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at the Newport Hospital before moving to New York for Post Grad work at the Doctors Hospital. Mrs. Arnold joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served in Japan before retiring after 23 years in 1966 as a Lt. Cmdr. She worked at the former Newport Naval Hospital in the Pediatric Clinic for five years. She was a member of the Newport Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Assn., the Catholic Daughters of America, the Navy Retired Officers Association, the Redwood Library and was a lifelong member of St. Josephs Church. She is survived by six cousins George Brown of Newport News, VA, Michael Brown of Portsmouth, RI, Vernon Brown of Providence, RI, Dr. Anthony Thomas, DO, of North Smithfield, RI, Margaret Thomas of Rumford, RI, and Jennifer Thomas of Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport.
