Portsmouth, RI - Ellen Margaret Cornwell, 84, of 52C Glen Meade Drive Portsmouth, died Friday, January 14, 2005 at home.She was the wife of Grant H.Cornwell also of Portsmouth.Formerly of New Canaan, CT and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Ellen had been a resident of Portsmouth for the last eight years. Born in Hibbing, MN on July 14, 1920, she was the daughter of the late George F. and Etna MacIntosh Gandsey.She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Virginia, MN and went on to graduate from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, where she received a BA degree in chemistry and biology. Ellen then completed a one-year course in Advanced Medical Technology at the University of Buffalo Medical School - Buffalo General Hospital, and worked as an analytical chemist for a pharmaceutical firm. She was married to Sgt. Grant Hermans Cornwell, USMC in July, 1943. Ellen was active in Skidmore alumnae associations and served as the President of the Chicago Alumnae Club, and as the Vice President of the Fairfield CT Alumnae Club. She was also a member of the Women?s College Board in Chicago. A lifelong Episcopalian, Ellen was a Sunday School Teacher, a member of several Altar Guilds, and served as President of the Service Guild in three parishes and as President of the Episcopal Churchwomen in two parishes. Her main interests have always been her home and her family, and many creative crafts including miniatures. Besides her husband of 62 years, she is survived by four children Mary Katharine Mary Kay Cornwell Lundberg of Portsmouth, RI, George Rathbun Cornwell III of Austin, TX, Thomas Gregory Cornwell of St. Thomas, USVI, Grant Hermans Cornwell Jr. of Canton, NY, She also leaves a brother George Edward Gandsey of Algonquin, IL and a sister Mary Gregory Gandsey Coffin of Huntsville, AL. ?Omey? is also survived by nine grandchildren Gregory Hartman Lundberg of Larchmont, NY, Thomas Gregory Cornwell Jr. of Seattle, WA, George Rathbun Cornwell IV of and Brendon Gandsey Cornwell both of Atlanta, GA, Sara Cornwell Lundberg of Portsmouth, RI, Christian Blackard Cornwell of Big Sky, MT, Adam Grant Cornwell of Atlanta, GA, Kelsey MacIntosh Cornwell of Canton, NY, MacIntosh Grant Cornwell of Canton, NY, she is also survived by her seven great grandchildren, George Rathbun Cornwell V of Atlanta, GA, Caro Blachard Cornwell of Charleston, SC, Eleanor Keen Lundberg of Larchmont, NY, Robert Grant Lundberg of Larchmont, NY, Meredith Cornwell Lundberg of Larchmont, NY, Alexander Robert Cornwell of Atlanta, GA and Tyson Raina Cornwell of Seattle, WA.She was also grandmother of the late Grant Hermans Tanner Cornwell III.Her funeral will be held Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Marys Churchyard in Portsmouth.
