Ellen Sweeney

Newport, RI - Ellen Quigley Sweeney, 84, of 398 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, formerly of Watson Street, died Monday, December 7, 2009 at Newport Hospital.She was the wife of the late Gordon Johnston Sweeney. Born in Fall River, MA on September 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Sophie Budziak Quigley.Mrs. Sweeney worked as a telephone operator. During World War II she moved to Newport and continued to work as a telephone operator. She then went to work for WADK in the sales and advertising department until marrying her husband and raising her family. Mrs. Sweeney loved bingo, traveling to West Palm Beach, FL, painting, cooking and shopping. She was a former member of the Jaycettes. Mrs. Sweeney was proud of her Polish heritage and spoke fluent Polish. She is survived by her daughter Jane Sweeney of Newport, RI, her son-in-law Robert F. Kent of Newport, RI, her grandson Mackenzie Robert Kent, her granddaughter Hillary Jane Kent her sister Mary Spilecki of Manchester, CT and several nieces, nephews, great nephews and great nieces.She was the mother of the late Jeffrey Gordon Sweeney and sister of the late Edward Quigley. Her funeral will be held on Friday, December 11, 2009, at 11:00am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.At the request of the family calling hours are omitted.
