Middletown, RI - Elvera Mare Matose, 88, formerly of 39 Brookdale Road, Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at St. Clare Home, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Joseph S. Matose III of Middletown who died in 1985. Born in San Miguel the Azores Portugal on April 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Joao V. and Maria Resendes Mare who immigrated to this country in 1921 through Ellis Island, New York. She was formerly employed by the Naval Torpedo Station in WWII, but spent most of her life as a day care and foster mother. She was also an excellent cook and seamstress. She was a very religious and dedicated parishioner of Jesus Saviour Church and was loved and respected by everyone. She helped many people and was affectionately known as ?Mama? Matose. Many people unburdened their hearts to her. She is survived by her sons Joseph S Matose IV and Robert F Matose, both of Middletown, RI, Gene P. Matose of Ft Worth, TX, her foster son Gerard Godin of Newport, RI, her foster daughter Audre Skakoon of Phoenix, AZ, her sisters Evelyn Schultz of Portsmouth, RI and Elsie Rodrigues of Mt. Pleasant, SC, her grandchildren Megan and Bryan Matose and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Joseph Mare and Manuel Mare and her sister Mary Rodrigues. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2007, from 2-4 and 7-9 and Friday, August 24, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 in the funeral home.
