Emma Jane Stone

Smithfield, VA - Emma Jane Stone, 91, of Smithfield, VA, departed this life on January 30, 2014 peacefully at home with her family by her side. Born in Newport, RI on April 3, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William Madison and Elizabeth James Barfield. Emma was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin E. Stone, of Hopewell, VA. She came to Smithfield where she had resided for the last 11 years with her daughter, Elizabeth Schwartz and her husband, Bob. Most of her working years were spent in the Newport Hospital in Newport RI in the housekeeping department. She was passionate about playing her harmonica for everyone, with her most recent visit to a nursing home to play for the residents there. She always surprised her family and friends with a phone call on their birthdays at which time she played her Birthday Greeting. Emma leaves behind to cherish her memory three children, Elizabeth Schwartz, and husband, Bob, of Smithfield, VA, son, Paul T. Simons, and wife, Alicia, of St Augustine, FL , and daughter, Pauline Trahan Lewis, and her husband James of Portsmouth, RI, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and extended family. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, from 1-2pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a service celebrating Emma's life at 2pm.
