Ernest Carrellas

Middletown, RI - Ernest J. Carrellas, 98, of Middletown, died Friday, December 6, 2013 at Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI. He was the husband of the late Alice Barbara (Silvia) Carrellas. Born in Fall River, MA, on February 19, 1915, he was the son of the late Manuel F. and Mary (Barboza) Carrellas. Mr. Carrellas began working with his father at the Carrellas Shoe Store at the age of 12. Thousands of satisfied schoolchildren and parents later, he retired in 1976. Ernest served on the Middletown Town Council for several years in the 1940's and 1950's. He was also on the Middletown High School planning committee. He began a second career at age 61as a full time tax preparer, bookkeeper and investor. Due to his lifelong skill will finance and details, he was the executor of the estates of many family members, neighbors, and friends.He loved discussing the stock market and investments, and he offered objective financial advice to any and all. He was generous spirit who contributed to dozens of charities over the years. Ernest was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church for many years. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Carrellas of New York City, his brother Dr. Anthony Carrellas of Middletown, RI, and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Arthur A. Carrellas, Joseph G. Carrellas, Alfred Carrellas, George J. Carrellas, Evelyn M. Almeida, Irene T. Carrellas and Mary Carrellas.Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013, from 2-4 and 7 - 9pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at 8am from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway, Newport. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.
