Middletown, RI - Ernest Lee Lane, MCPO, USN, Ret, 81, of 12 Aquidneck Drive, Middletown, RI and New Port Richey, FL, passed from the loving arms of his wife Dorothy Hyder-Lane to the waiting arms of his Lord on Thursday, November 6, 2008. Born in Auburndale, FL on October 31, 1927, he was the son of the late Clifford and Beatrice Gross Lane.He was raised in Belfast, Maine. Mr. Lane a Vet of 3 wars joined the Navy in 1944 and served the better part of his career in Aviation Electronics as an Airdale. He was selected to the newly established rank of Master Chief on the second go around missing the first because he had not been senior chief for the required one year minimum. Following his retirement after twenty years active service and ten years reserve duty he attended Old Dominion University in Virginia graduating with a degree in Biology. While working as a biologist he earned his masters degree in education from Syracuse University Mr. Lane taught sciences in Booker T. Washington High School in Virginia, while working on his doctorate in education. He moved to Newport in 1979 before completion of his doctorate in education. He worked as a technical editor for Sperry, Rand, Paramax and retired from Unysis Corp in 1994. He worked for 3 years for Otis Elevator writing their technical manual working concurrent with Paramax. Mr. Lane had a passion for education, never missing a chance to encourage education in young people he came in contact with. He was an avid reader maintaining an extensive library, often sharing his collection of books with young students. He purchased books at auctions and would distribute them to students and donate to local libraries. He and his wife were auction buffs and enjoyed researching the hallmark and history of glass, china and silver as well as treasures from the Victorian Era. His memberships include the VFW, the National Association of Uniformed Services, Fleet Reserve as well as a life time member of the National Teachers Association. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters Zoe Celleste Weber of Colorado Springs, CO, and Zadell Yvonne Rung of North Port, FL, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, as well as thirteen half brothers and sisters in the Maine, Pennsylvania and North Carolina areas. He also leaves Juan and Catiana Rosario and their family as well as Dr. Francisco and Eleanora Gutierrez and their family whom he considered his children of heart.He was the father of the late Gerald Lee LaneHis funeral will be held on Monday, November 10, 2008, at 9:30, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the funeral home.
