Esther Lucy Hargrove

Esther I. Hargrove, 91, of Heatherwood, Newport, RI, peacefully passed away, Monday, November 30, 2015 at Newport Hospital after a short illness.Born on January 18, 1924 in Newport she was the only daughter of the late Ollie and Catherine (MacLeod) Hargrove. She is preceded in death by her seven brothers, Joseph, William, Harry, Norman, Donald, Douglas, and Roger Hargrove. Esther raised on Warner Street attended Newport schools. As a young woman she worked as a government employee in the clerical department of the former Newport Naval Hospital until 1967 when she transferred to the Naval Air Station at Coronado, San Diego, California. Esther returned to her hometown, Newport in 1980.She was a animal lover, enjoyed music, talk radio, desserts- especially chocolate, and was a former Red Hat Society member.Esther is survived by her nieces, Susan Moore of Newport, Linda Huffmaster of Florida, Kaye Caplan of Portsmouth, Jill Pica of Bristol, her nephews Stephen Hargrove of Portsmouth, Roger Hargrove of Connecticut, Brian Hargrove of Warwick, her sisters-in-law Margaret Hargrove and Lillian Hargrove, both of Newport. Esther also leaves several grand nieces and nephews and three great nieces.A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at 2:00pm in Hambly Funeral Home, "Brick House", 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in Esther's name to the Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840 or to Heatherwood Nursing Home, Activity Fund, 398 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
