Eugene Hamilton Gene Young, 69, who resided at 19 Chapel Street in Newport, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence after a brief illness.Born in Newport, RI on October 16, 1939, he was the son of the late Sarah L. Weston and Melvin E. Young.He was a graduate of Rogers High School and later served in the United States Army.Gene was employed as a presser at Plaza Cleaners, formerly Egans Laundry and Dry Cleaners, retiring in 2007. He was a faithful employee for over 30 years.Gene loved watching the Celtics and he always enjoyed the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and his favorite team, the New York Yankees. He was also an avid New England Patriots fan and enjoyed the music of Sam Cooke. He always enjoyed family gatherings and holiday parties. He was very fond of his friends and neighbors at the Chapel Street High Rise.He leaves to mourn his death, his beloved brother, Warren Buzzy Young and his wife, Mary Young, his many nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.He was preceded in death by his brother, Melvin Pete Young and his sisters, Dorothy Dot Wigington, Gwendolyn Gwennie Peer and Alice Young.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 9-10 am followed by a funeral service at 10 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
