Newport, RI - Eugenia M. Williams Jennie of 22 Johnson Court, formerly of 47 Kingston Avenue, Newport, died June 14, 2009 at St. Clare Nursing Home in the loving arms of her daughter Alicia. Born in Newport, RI on June 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Simplicio Lopes and Joanna Brito Moreino.Jennie worked as a social worker for 20 years for New Visions of Newport and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. After retirement she became a foster grandparent for Child Family Services, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Head Start. She was instrumental in recruiting other foster parents in the Newport area. She also volunteered at Newport Hospital crocheting hats and booties for newborns. Jennie received her BA from Roger Williams University in Social Services. She was a member of the Antipoverty Service Center at St. Pauls Church, a founding member of Church Community Housing Corp, a member of Mumford Manor Tenants Association, a member of West Broadway Neighborhood Association, where she was instrumental in the development of Kingston Avenue Tot Lot. Jennie was a communicant of St. Josephs Church. She received the Fair Housing Special Achievement Award in 1986 and also the Outstanding Achievement Award in Fair Housing from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. She attended the Forest Farm Adult Day Care Center for many years. Eugenia enjoyed playing bonanza, bingo, pokeno and slot machines. She is survived by her children, Harold M. Williams of Boston, MA, Calvin J. Williams and his wife Marjorie of Madison, WI, Joseph A. Williams and his wife Betty of El Paso, TX, Mark Williams of Newport, RI, Joanna T. Sommerville and her husband John of Newport, RI, Christine A. Scotton and her husband Paul of Rockwell, NC, Denise L. Creekmur and her husband Lamar of Chesapeake, VA, Monica A. Williams and Kenneth A. Quarles of Long Island, NY, Alicia M. Williams and Nathaniel Johnson of Middletown, RI and Marjorie M. Williams and her husband Douglas of Boston, MA, her sister Josephine Silva of Jamaica, NY, fourteen grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. She was the sister of the late Joseph P. Jerry Moreino, Gregory Moreino, Timothy M. Moreino, Mary Grace Golden and Phillippa E. Almeida. While at home she was in the loving care of Carol Medina and at St. Clare Home she acquired a second family of care givers. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009, from 7-9 in the funeral home.
