Evarista Palmira Neves, 94, of Middletown, RI, formerly of Pope Street, Newport, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Manuel Neves.Born in Faial, the Azores, on June 7, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Eleuterio Morais and Evarista de Sousa Morais. Mrs. Neves moved to America at 45 years old from Faial, Azores. She worked at the Newport Hospital for 20 years and was employed as the first Portuguese housekeeper. She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. Mrs. Neves sponsored many friends and family who wanted to move to the United States from Portugal. Along with her husband, they owned and operated a farm on Paradise Avenue in Middletown.She is survived by her daughter Maria Pereira of Middletown, RI, her eight grandchildren, Maria Dowler, Joe Pereira, Rose Kivlehan, Linda Ferreira, Anna Pereira, Lee Lima, Michael DaSilveira and Melissa DaSilveira, and seventeen great grandchildren.She was the mother of the late Antonio Neves who passed way as a child and Evarista DaSilveira of New Bedford, MA. She was the sister of the late Eleuterio Morais, Manuel Morais, Palmira Rosareo, Rosa de Rosa, and Maria C Morais. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway and Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009, from 5:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.Donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 222 Richmond Street, Suite 108, Providence, RI 02903.
