Middletown, RI - Everett W Smith, Jr., died May 17, 2006, at Newport Hospital after a long battle with emphysema. Born in Newport, RI, on October 1931, he was the son of the late Everett W. and Jennie Kaull Smith.Everett was a Mechanical Engineering Technician for the U.S. Naval Underwater Systems Center, retiring in January 1995 after 30 years of service. He previously worked at ML Die and Tool of Middletown, Garreau Co. of Newport, and served his apprenticeship at Aquidneck Engineering in Portsmouth.In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his Dad, friends and his dog Brian. Later, he kept his boat at Castle Hill where he shared his love of the sea and fishing with his children and his first grandchild. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.He was a member of NARFE, AARP and the Middletown Senior Center. Previously, he was a member of the Newport Saltwater Fishing and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.Everett is survived by his wife of 40 years, Phyllis Peckham Smith, two sons Wayne C. Smith, Jr. of Narragansett and Stephen Smith of Louisiana, three daughters, Judy Sullivan of Middletown, Wendy Couturier of Little Compton, and Loreen Baker of Newport, four grandchildren, Matthew Smith of Akron, Ohio, Sherri Rodrigues and Wayne C. Smith, Jr., both of Middletown and Delia Carpenter of Newport; six great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Tori Smith of Ohio, Brynn McLeish, Jacob and Joshua Smith of Middletown and Lexus Brown of Newport, his sister Janet W. Marvelle of Newport, his niece Jane Green of Newport, two nephews Daniel W. Marvelle of Portsmouth and Robert C. Marvelle of Newport and their families and several step grandchildren. He is also survived by Maggie, his golden retriever and constant companion.. He was the grandfather of the late Stacey Rodrigues.Memorial services will be held at St. Georges Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2006.In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Georges Episcopal Church, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport, RI 02840 or the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
