Middletown, RI - Exum Leroy Pike, 93, of 75 Bayview Park, Middletown, RI, died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.He was the husband of Cecelia Makara Pike. Born in Asheville, NC on September 25, 1916, he was the son of the late Exum Leroy and Grace Wooton Pike.Mr. Pike served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was on Omaha Beach on D-Day and his ship sank the 1st German Sub in American Waters off Virginia Beach. He was a food administrator for the Newport Hospital for 26 years, retiring in 1984. Exum was a communicant of St. Lucys Church, and served on the board of directors and was a member of Wanumetonomy Golf Club. Besides his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his sons, Exum Leroy Pike, Jr. of Middletown, RI and Michael Pike of Portsmouth, RI, his sisters, Caroline Metcalf of Hickory, NC and Shirley Swilling of Asheville, NC and his four grandchildren, Natalie Pike, Christine Pike, Richard Marley, Jr. and Lynn Marley Muckerhide. He was the brother of the late Jean Tanner, Henrietta Petit, Evelyn Plamondon and Lucille Penely. His funeral will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 8:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.Burial with Military Honors will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from 4-7pm in the funeral home.
