PORTSMOUTH, RI - Francis X. Daly, 62, of Providence, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in the Bronx, NY on August 16, 1951, he was the son of the late Francis X. Daly and Raffaela (LaRosa) Daly. Mr. Daly attended and graduated from Shenendahoa High School in 1969. He received his Bachelor's in Business Administration from Sienna College in 1973. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army and served as an Army aviator as part of the 1st Air Cavalry serving in Europe from 1975 until 1978. During his service, he earned various commendations including the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Aviator Badge, and Expert Marksman Badge. He earned an honorable discharge at the grade of Captain in 1981. Upon his discharge he worked for a number of professional service firms including, among others, Peat Marwick, Mitchell and Co. (Newport, Rhode Island) and AMA (Newport, Rhode Island). He was a passionate educator at Bryant University, the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Bristol Community College, and Quinebaug Valley Community College, among others. He enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies and was recognized by his peers as an authority in early American history, particluarly the American Revolution and Civil Wars. He was a member and re-enactor with Ye Olde Lebanon Towne Militia, Co. 1775 and was highly sought by educators and organizations for his living history portrayals. He was an active member of the National Rifle Association, the Manville Sportsmens Rod and Gun Club, the Rhode Island Tea Party, the Rhode Island Oath Keepers, Arnold Mills Communityites, St Ambrose Catholic Church of Albion, Attleboro Art Museum, and Friends of the Hearthside House. He is survived by his son Jason B. Daly and his wife Deborah R. Daly of Wassenaar, The Netherlands, his daughter-in-law Kathy Daly of Portsmouth, RI, his step children, Benjamin C. Stanfield, Amelia Vermilyea and Alexander Vermilyea, his brothers John A. Daly of FL, and George F. Daly of TN, his sister Lorraine C. Daly of Utah, his grandchildren, Keira E., Anna R. and Jackson P. Daly and his step grandchildren, Elizabeth A. and Karina A. Winter. He was the father of the late Erik Daly and brother of the late Mary Catherine Hull. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2013, from 2-5pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. His funeral will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013, at 9am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
