Keene, NH - Frank H. McCarty, 87, longtime resident of Portsmouth, RI, died April 24th at Langdon Place in Keene, NH, after a brave and lengthy battle with myelodysplastic syndrome and heart disease.Born on April 16th, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA he was the son of the late Francis Henry and Helen (Casey) McCarty.He attended Northeast Catholic High School and graduated from Lincoln College Prep in Philadelphia. During World War II, he was a forward combat observer for the U.S. Army in the 287th Field Artillery Observation Battalion and saw service in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal with two bronze stars.After the war he worked at Philco attending LaSalle University at night where he received a B.S. in Industrial Management in 1959. While at Philco he met and married his late wife, Alma (Holler) McCarty. He was also a graduate of the Radio and Electronics Institute and the American Technical Institute.In 1960 the couple moved to Portsmouth, RI where he lived until August 2011. Mr. McCarty worked at the Submarine Signal Division of Raytheon in Portsmouth until 1970 when he was promoted to Director of Manufacturing Engineering for the corporate offices of Raytheon, then located in Lexington, MA.He was a registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer. He was a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.During his career he published many articles and was a contributing author of McGraw Hills Handbook of Modern Manufacturing Management.Mr. McCarty served on the Board of Directors of the Raytheon Credit Union. He was elected President of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research in 1980. He also served on the board of the Society for Manufacturing Engineering in various positions and was elected President of the Board in 1993. Mr. McCarty was a kind and gracious soul and a devout Catholic. He will be remembered for his amazing smile, quick wit, and positive attitude. He was a wonderful father and especially loved his role as Poppa Frank to his much loved grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Mary Callahan of Berwyn, PA, two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine Christopher Betts of Swanzey Center, NH, and Michelle and Francis Callaghan of Barrington, RI, grandchildren, Rebecca and Adam Betts of Swanzey Center and Catherine and Nicholas Callaghan of Barrington, and many nieces and nephews. His wife Alma and grandson, Michael Francis Callaghan predeceased him.Calling hours will be held on Thursday April 26, 2012, from 4:30-7:30pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral will be held on Friday April 27, 2012 at 9:00am, from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Anthonys Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Donations in his memory may be made to Our Lady of La Salette Shrine, 947 Park Street, Attleboro, MA 02703.
