Middletown, RI - Frank Jesse Alvanas, 71, of 333 Green End Avenue, Middletown, RI, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, surrounded by his family at Newport HospitalHe was the former husband of Jean Sanches Alvanas. Born in Portsmouth, RI on September 29, 1937, he was the son of Mary Raposa Alvanas of Middletown, RI and the late Manuel J. Alvanas.Mr. Alvanas was a fireman for the Portsmouth Fire Department joining in July of 1972 and retiring January 22, 1986. He also worked at Raytheon Corp and had been a self employed plaster all his life. He was a member of the Portsmouth Portuguese American Club and the Portsmouth Firemans Association he was also a CYO director at St. Barnabas Church. Frank, also coached little league with the kids. He is survived by his children, Christopher M. Alvanas, Bruce Alvanas and Eric Alvanas all of Portsmouth, RI and Stephanie Peterman of Colorado Springs, CO, his brother Stephen Alvanas of Knoxville, TN, and his grandchildren Dustin M. Alvanas, Cassidy J. Alvanas, Kyle A. Alvanas, Evan J. Alvanas, Alexis J. Alvanas and Andrew J. Alvanas all of Portsmouth, RI and Hailey K. Peterman and Christopher M. Peterman of Colorado Springs, CO.He was the brother of the late Manuel Alvanas and Josephine Tiffault. His funeral will be held on Monday, March 16, 2009, at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial with Military Honors, will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the funeral home.
