Middletown, RI - Frank Joseph Giacobbe, 92, of Grand Islander Health Care Center Middletown, formerly of 15 North Drive Slate Hill Farm, died Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at the center.He was the husband of the late Lillian Mary Barry Giacobbe. Born in Charlestown, MA on December 20, 1911, he was the son of the late John and Antoinette Crisafi Giacobbe. Mr. Giacobbe was a 1929 graduate of Somerville High School, Somerville, MA and the Bently School of Accounting and Fiance in Boston, MA. From 1931 to 1936 Frank was employed by the R. H. White Company of Boston as a Stockman and as a Statistical Clerk. While in Boston he joined the National Guard, 110 Cavalry, and became quite proficient at riding ?hayburners?. Frank was appointed to the Naval Torpedo Station, Newport on August 27, 1936 as Traffic Clerk. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was attached to the Blimp Station at South Weymouth, MA. Later he was at sea for two years aboard the USS Cabot, an aircraft carrier which traveled 134, 000 nautical miles in combat zones in the Pacific. While Frank was aboard the CABOT, it was hit twice by Kamakazi suicide airplanes while engaged in major campaigns from the Marshall Islands to Okinawa. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in September 1945 as Chief Aviation Storekeeper and prefers riding the horse to riding the sea. In his early youth Frank played the violin and led the high school orchestra in his senior year. His hobby is woodworking and he has shown his talent for this craft by building a cupola on the garage roof attached to his home at Slate Hill Farm. He was a member of the Sons of Italy, the American Legion and the Retired Federal Employees Association. He is survived by his niece Dorothy McCarthy of Chelmford, MA. His funeral will be held on Monday, November 15, 2004, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
