Frank P. "Mickey" Mello, of Beacon Terrace North, Middletown, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Margaret "Peggy" (Connerton) Mello whom he married in 1955.Born in Portsmouth, RI, he was the son of the late Manuel T. and Eva B. (Perry) Mello.He was a 1946 graduate of Rogers High School. He went to work in the family business, Mello Construction Company Inc., and became co-owner in 1968 where he remained until his retirement in 1995. He was the former co-owner with his brother Bob until this past September of the Bay View Trailer Park in Middletown. He was a parishioner of St. Lucys Church in Middletown and served on the first parish council on the finance and property committee. He was a life member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus. He served on the Middletown Planning Board from 1971 to 2001. He also served on the Middletown Tree Commission while a member of the board. He was past Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of Looking Upwards Inc. He was a member of the Newport Preservation Society, the Newport Art Association, the Rose Island Lighthouse, the Middletown Historical Society and the James L. Maher Center. He loved his home, which he and his wife built in 1955 when they were first married. He was an avid gardener and loved his flower gardens. He and his son took on many projects, and always completed them.Besides his wife, he leaves his son Robert F. Mello of Middletown, RI, his sister, Eva Betty Lopes of Portsmouth, RI, two brothers, John R. Mello and Manuel J. Mello Jr. both of Middletown, RI, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late George J. Mello and Mary Mello Silvia. He also leaves his many close friends or the "Gang" as they were referred to.
