NEWPORT, RI - LCDR Frederick Fred Allan Stevenson, USN Ret., 84, of 189 Tuckerman Ave, Middletown, R.I., died after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at Newport Hospital, Newport, R.I., surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Dorothy Dana Stevenson, his devoted partner for over 60 years. Born in New York, N.Y., on May 20, 1921, he was the son of the late Duncan and Amelia Odinet Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson joined the United States Navy in 1938 and was delayed on his way to Newport for basic training by the Great Hurricane of 1938. When he and other recruits finally arrived they helped with the massive clean up effort. After a few years at sea Mr. Stevenson was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy where he graduated in 1945 Class of 1946. He proudly served as a line officer on many destroyers and was also the Executive Officer of the Destroyer Tender USS Grand Canyon AD-28 here in Newport. He retired from the Navy in 1963. Mr. Stevenson then worked for the Naval Underwater Ordinance Station now Naval Undersea Warfare Center until 1966 when he joined Control Data Corp. of Minneapolis, Minn., until 1978. He joined TRACOR in New London, Conn., in 1979 and worked with them for 10 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a past member of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club of Newport where he taught his family to sail on his Ensign. He was also a former member and past Commodore of the Wayzata Yacht Club of Minnetonka, Minn. Mr. Stevenson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newport where he was a deacon and member of the Sanctuary Choir. He especially enjoyed his volunteer work for the past 10 years as a patient transporter at Newport Hospital. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Dana Stevenson of Middletown, R.I., daughter Dana Stevenson of Tiverton, R.I., daughter Jane Stevenson Tracy and her husband Richard Tracy of Middletown, R.I., two grandchildren, Nathan Stuart Tracy and Ryan Packer Tracy, both of Middletown, R.I., and a number of neices and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brothers Duncan and Frank Stevenson and a sister Gertrude Stevenson. His memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, Broadway and Everett, Newport. A service will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
