Frederick Russell Smith Sr

Torpedoman?s Mate Chief, USN, Retired, Frederick R. Smith Sr., Eldest son of Albert Smith and Mary Chioda Smith both now deceased, brother of Kenneth Smith and the late Beverly Shays of Worcester, MA, passed away on 15 January 2006 at Newport Hospital in Newport, RI.A loving husband, father, and grandfather, his professional career included 22 years in the U.S. Navy, 20 years as a government contractor supporting the U.S. Navy, and Job Coach at Looking Upwards in Middletown, RI.Chief Smith attended primary and secondary school in Worcester, MA. In October 1956, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served until his retirement in 1978. During his career, Chief Smith served at various sea and shore commands and was awarded the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal with two stars, Expert Pistol Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.A dedicated and active volunteer he was involved in numerous youth programs including the Cub Scouts, youth baseball and football leagues. As a member of the Knights of Columbus Middletown Council #4201 he served as Grand Knight. He was also a member of General Rosecrans Assembly 4th degree where he held various offices, and served on the Bishops Honor Guard.He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Kathy Hoyle Smith of Portsmouth, RI; three loving sons: Fred Jr., John F.K. and his wife MaryAnn, and Chris and his wife Linda. He also leaves six adoring grandchildren: Ryan, Corey, Morgan, Ian, James and Katie as well as several nieces and nephews. Viewing will be held Wednesday, January 18, between the hours of 5 PM and 9 PM at Fazio Sons Funeral Home, 9 Branch Ave., Worcester, MA. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 19 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 28 Mulberry Street, Worcester, MA at 9:30 AM.In lieu of flowers, a donation in honor of Frederick R.
