Portsmouth, RI - Garney "Floyd" Farthing III, 52, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital Providence, RI.Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Garney Farthing Jr. and Annie E. (Carroll) Whalon.Garney was a friend to whoever he met and will be greatly missed.He was a talented mechanic who began his career at Johnnys Getty in Middletown RI in the 1970s where he received his lifelong moniker, Floyd and worked alongside John F. Gomes, the late John R. Gomes and the rest of the Getty crew.Floyd will be most remembered for his years at his own shop, Floyds East Bay Auto Repair in Middletown RI, where he had many intimate and personal relationships with his clientele. He always said that he didn't have customers, he had friends. He was generous, kind and always had a way of putting a smile on the faces of those around him.A talented musician, he played locally since the 1970s. His first performance was in 1975 at Fort Adams State Park with his friends Steve Fontaine, Don Emery and Gus Cote. His band, Press Release, played in many venues around New England during the 1980s and over the years he played with many talented musicians.He is survived by his Sister Gail K Frisk and her husband Leo C. Frisk of Harrisville, RI, his nephews Michael, Zachariah, and Sebastian Ribera, his great nephew Crosby Ribera, his sister-in-law, Joanne (Biello) Farthing and his nieces, Kirsten and Samantha Farthing. He is also survived by his lifelong friend and ex-wife, Marybeth Groff who was by his side when he passed.He was the brother of the late Robert Farthing, Derrick Farthing and Timothy Farthing and the devoted human to his late Bullmastiff canine companions Jasper and Zoe.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2014, from 4-8pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to http://www.bullmastiff.us/rescue.html Visitation OCT 30. 04:00 PM - 08:00 PM Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI, US, 02840 info@memorialfuneralhome.com http://www.memorialfuneralhome.com
