On November 2, 2011 Garold E. Doc Payton, Jr. was called home to be with our Lord. Garold was the son of the late Josephine Platts, the late Garold E. Payton, Sr. and the late Johnnie Platts, Sr. He was born on February 9, 1946 and lived in Newport, RI all of his life. Garold attended the Newport School System graduating in 1965 from Rogers High School where he was involved in sports, especially with the track and football teams where he was known for his quickness and speed. He was also a member of a group called the Spartans.After graduating, Garold joined the US Navy as a Corpsman serving in Vietnam. It was while serving in Vietnam that he acquired the nickname Doc. After serving in the Navy, he began working at Newport Hospital for many years as a Bone Setter. Later he began working for Bill Del Neros Cleaners until becoming sick and had to stop working.Garolds love for sports would have him watching it as much as possible. His favorite teams were the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Outside of his love for sports, he loved watching the Food Network Channel and would try and replicate some of their recipes. He also enjoyed doing word search books.In addition to his parents, Garold is preceded in death by his grandmothers, Eltie Mae Jennings and Sadie Whalen, two aunts, Florence Robinson and Margaret Crum, and most recently by his nephew, Edward R.R. Platts.He leaves behind three brothers, Charles Payton of Providence, RI, Russell Payton and wife Lula of New Bern, NC and Johnnie Platts, Jr. and wife Joyce of Newport, RI; three sisters, Lois Robinson and husband Isaac of Middletown, RI, Janice James and husband Michael of Newport, RI and Daneen Smith of Jonesville, NC; three daughters, Rhonda Rice and husband Donald of Pensacola, FL, Vanessa Payton of Pawtucket, RI and Valirie Payton of Providence, RI; one granddaughter, Janell Dixon of Pensacola, FL, along with a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.Visitation will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 10-11 am in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd., Newport, RI, followed by a funeral service in the church at 11 am.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Attn: Dialysis Program, 830 Chalkstone Avenue Providence RI 02908.
