Newport, RI ? Genevieve Vars Clarke, 97, of John Clarke Retirement Center, Middletown, RI, formerly of Pond Avenue, Newport, died Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at the center. She was the wife of the late George Whitfield Clarke. Born in Newport, RI, on March 10, 1909, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Jennie Kelly Vars.Mrs. Clarke was a member of Emmanuel Church where she was very active as a choir mother for years and in their sewing group. She was an avid Red Sox Fan. She is survived by her daughter Diane Ferriera of Middletown, RI, her brothers Richard Vars of Portsmouth, RI, and Robert Vars of California, her sisters Jean Livingston of Newport, RI, and Dolores Bond of California, her granddaughters Jessica Ferrell and Jennifer Ferriera both of Middletown, RI, her grandsons Richard Clarke, Mark Clarke, Jeffrey Clarke and Robert Clarke, and her great grandchild. She was the mother of the late Jack Clarke, the sister of the late Edward Vars, Harold Vars, William Vars, Frances Munroe, Flora Easterbrooks, Ruth Klinefelter, Doris Lalli and Alice M. Vars, and the grandmother of the late Jack Clarke Jr. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2006, at 11:00 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Braman Cemetery in Newport.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 15, 2006, from 5-8pm in the funeral home.
