George Augustus Jefferds Jr

New Bedford, MA - George Augustus Jefferds, Jr., of 137 Dawson Street, New Bedford, formerly of Forbes Street, New Bedford, MA, died Monday, December 20, 2004 at St. Lukes Hosptial New Bedford, MA. Born in Westbrook, ME on August 10, 1928, he was the son of the late George Augustus and Gertrude Gallant Jefferds. Mr. Jefferds was in the United States Navy, serving in World War II, Korea and the Vietnam Wars. He was a chef for the United States Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1965, he also worked security at Raytheon in Rhode Island, for the VA in Providence for 10 years, he managed various restaurants in the New Bedford area and also worked as a banking courier. Mr. Jefferds was a commander of the VFW Post #5390 of Common Fence Point in Portsmouth, a Past President of the Newport Rotary Club, a Lieutenant in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps and a communicant of St. Theresas Church in New Bedford, MA. He enjoyed cooking for large groups and spending time with his family. He is survived by three sons Gary A. Jefferds of Portsmouth, RI, and Adam C. Jefferds and Ethan R. Jefferds both of New Bedford, MA, three daughters Karen H. Motta of Fall River, MA, Donna Marie Spencer of Newport, RI, and Susan G. Evans of Virginia Beach, VA, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Friday, December 24, 2004, at 9:00 AM in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, Rhode Island Affiliate, 275 Westminster Street, Providence, RI 02903.
