Newport, RI - George B. Davis, 95, of Keeher Avenue, Newport, passed away peacefully at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center on December 1, 2014. He was the husband of the late Jessie N. Davis.Born in Youngstown, OH on June 7, 1919, he was the son of the late Rennie and Eleanor (Steele) Davis. He first came to Newport in 1939 while in the Navy where he met his wife of 70 years Jessie. While in the Navy he attained the rate of Machinist Mate Chief, was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and several other campaigns. Upon his discharge he was employed as a gardener at Bonniecrest and the Auchincloss estates. From there to the Nune's Chrysler Plymouth Dealership where he worked his way up to service manager. Then after moved on to become an employee of the Newport Electric Company where he performed the duties of power plant operator. Where incidentally he was involved in the quick realization and immediate action to preserve power locally during the Great Blackout of 1969. The only place to do so on the East Coast. George was also an avid sports enthusiast and a former Ohio State and Golden Gloves boxing champion. He also coached the Caledonian basketball team at the Mary Street YMCA and briefly taught boxing. George was very active at the First Presbyterian Church serving as Deacon and Elder and was involved in several volunteer and social organizations. He and his wife Jessie were avid local fisherman and could be seen regularly around the Ocean Drive catching Totog from the rocks. George was a kind and friendly family man, had good humor, a warm smile and a firm handshake for all. His friendly and giving attitude was an inspiration to everyone he met. He will be missed greatly by his friends and surviving family.He is survived by his brother, Rennie and his sister Ruth of Ohio, also two daughters Lynn Dolanch of PA and Susan Kyle of SC and his son William Davis of Newport. In addition seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014, at 1:00 PM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Flowers or donations are unnecessary.
