Portsmouth, RI - George D. "Dave" Crockett, 80, of Portsmouth, RI, died the day after his 80th birthday, Friday, May 18, 2012 after battling a long illness at St. Clare Home, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Susan G. (Gordner) Crockett. Born in Santa Fe, NM on May 17, 1932, he was the son of the late George H. and Virginia (Blevins) Crockett. Descendants of Davy Crockett.Mr. Crockett served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was a graduate of UCLA receiving his BS in Engineering. After graduation he worked for various engineering industries in California then moving to Portsmouth to continue his career as an engineer at Raytheon retiring in 1991 after 25 years. Dave was a very active member of the Portsmouth community, a Boy Scout volunteer with Troup 82, a committee member who founded and designed Melville Ponds camp ground, he also served three terms on the Portsmouth Water Board. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church and enjoyed camping, furniture making, an avid book reader and bridge player. He enjoyed taking pictures and his passion was cooking, especially authentic Mexican dishes. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his children, David B. and his wife Leslie Crockett of Wakefield, RI, Susan H. and her husband Fred Andrews of North Kingstown, RI, and Cindy L. and her husband John Dutra of Portsmouth, RI, and his eight grandchildren.He was the brother of the late Geraldine Wright. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 5:00pm to 8:00pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.His funeral will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 11:00am, in St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
