George Decosta Dias

Portsmouth, RI - George DeCosta Dias, 82, of 1335 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, died Monday, January 28, 2008 surrounded by his family at his daughters home in North Smithfield, RI. Born in Portsmouth, RI on August 1, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph D. and Maria M. DeCosta Dias.Mr. Dias served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a boat builder and foreman for 28 years at Pearson Yachts, retiring in 1990. George attended Portsmouth High School, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the VFW and the Portuguese American Citizens Club. He was a 58 year member of the American Legion and was also very active in the navy Reserve. Mr. Dias was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth A. St. Laurent and her husband Art of North Smithfield, RI, his brothers Joseph Dias of Fall River, MA, James and William Dias of Portsmouth, RI, his sisters Mary Quinn and Ann White of Newport, RI, and his granddaughter Amber R. Dias of North Smithfield, RI.He was the father of the late Jeanie H. Dias. His funeral will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008, at 9:00 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008, from 5-8 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, 169 George Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
