Newport, - George E. Moniz, 74, of 23 Keeher Avenue Newport, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at home. Born in Newport, RI on February 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Evaristo and Anna DeTerra Costa Moniz.Mr. Moniz was a Navy Veteran of WW II stationed at the U S Naval Base in Pensacola, FL. After the war he was employed at the Quonset Naval Air Station until he graduated from the Massachusetts School of Barbering in Boston, MA. He then worked in various barbershops in the Newport Area and in 1949 he was awarded 1st Place by the State of Rhode Island for his Barbering skills. He opened his own shop in 1950 at 106 Broadway in Newport and operated Georges Barber Shop for over 53 years. Mr. Moniz was a former member of the Knights Of Columbus, Newport Council No. 256, where he was one of the primary chefs at the Nationality Nights at the Council Home. He enjoyed exploring Boston, MA with his family and friends as well as being an avid quoahoger and fisherman in Narragansett Bay. He was a member of Jesus Saviour Church. He is survived by his daughter Lori Castonguay of Fall River, MA, his son George J Moniz of Newport, RI, his brother Manuel Moniz of Union City, CA, three sisters Mary Murdock of Dade City, FL, Laura Pine of Middletown, RI, and Gloria Sanfilippo of Newport, RI, and five Grandchildren. His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at 9:00 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
