- George Lee Coppit, 76, of 8 Wilson Road Middletown, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Athena ?Bobby? Alexander Coppit of Middletown. Born in Ragland, AL on May 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Willie C. and Modell Phillips Coppit.Mr. Coppit had worked for Lafayette Market on Bellevue Avenue, Newport for several years he then worked at Bric Market and the Newport Creamery. He had worked for the Doris Duke Estate. He had been employed by the Doubletree Hotel as the head painter. Mr. Coppit enlisted in the United States Marines shortly after Pearl Harbor and trained at Camp Lejeune. He was then sent to Newport RI to the Marine barracks. From Newport he joined the 4th Marine Division for the invasion of Iwo Jima. He also served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Iwo Jima Survivors of CT and RI, and a longtime member of Trinity Church. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter Janie F. Raffa of Newport, RI, two brothers Larry Coppit of Soddy Daisey, TN, Donald Wayne Coppit of Rossville, GA, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.He was the father of the late George L. Coppit Jr. His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 11:00AM in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.
