Connors Funeral Home55 West Main RoadPortsmouth, RI401 683-2511George Lionel Johnston Portsmouth, RI - George Lionel Johnston, 80, of 141 Belmont Drive, Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Barrington, RI, died peacefully Monday, January 14, 2008 at home with his wife. He was the husband of Gail Hubbard Johnston of Portsmouth, RI and the late Virginia Graves. Born in Portland, ME on June 29, 1927, he was the son of the late George and Alnah James Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Choate School in Wallingford, CT. After graduation from Choate, he joined the US Navy, during World War II. Returning home after being honorably discharged from the Navy he entered Brown University and graduated with a BA in English Literature in 1951. From 1952 to 1975, he worked in the brokerage business for Paine Webber and several other large firms in Boston before joining Fleet Bank, where he retired in 1992 as a vice president and trust officer.In retirement, Mr. Johnston served on the board of directors of Oakland Farm Condominium Association and was active in the Brown Community Learning and Retirement Center, where he taught courses on basic investing and pursued his interest in history and the law. He owned a summer home on Little Diamond Island Maine, and was a former president of the Little Diamond Island Association. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Johnston enjoyed sailing his boat "Celebration" in Narragansett Bay, and often sailed to Casco Bay, Maine. He also loved photography, traveling and skiing in the New England area. Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons Mark J. Johnston, of Los Angeles, California and Scott T. Johnston of North Yarmouth, Maine; his granddaughter, Hannah V. Johnston of North Yarmouth, Maine; his sister Barbara Baggesen of Westboro, MA; and his nephew Dana Friis-Hansen, and niece, Sandra Hansen, his step daughter Linda McKenna of Medfield, MA, his step son Curtis Leatherbee of Portsmouth, RI, his step grandchildren Corey McKenna and Alison McKenna. A time of remembrance will take place on Monday, January 21, 2008, from 2-4pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI and also at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage St., South Portland, ME on Thursday January 24, 2008 from 4pm to 6pm.
