George P. White, 85, of Green End Avenue, Middletown, RI, died peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Village House in Newport, RI.He was the husband of the late Mary Frances (Escobar) White.Born in Newport, RI on July 7, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Candida (Raposa) White.Mr.White, who was called George by all who knew him, was the Assistant General Manager and Assistant Treasurer at People's Credit Union for over 30 years before retiring. He was a graduate of Rogers High School and Bryant College. George was very active with Jesus Savior Church in Newport and served in many capacities, including as bookkeeper, Eucharistic Minister, lectern and a C.C.D. teacher. He was a past president of the Middletown Rotary Club. George was an avid gardener who spent many hours tending his roses, calla lilies and koi pond. He also enjoyed photography, and in his younger days, skiing. He loved spending time with his family and was a doting "papa" to his only grandchild, Carter. Papa routinely sat on the sidelines of many of his lacrosse and football games.He is survived by his children; Stephen White and his wife, Grace, of Westerly, RI, Michael P. White and his wife, Mary Leck, of Palm Desert, CA, Andrew J. White of Falmouth, MA, Tracey A. White of Middletown, RI, and Matthew J. White and his wife, Dianna Odell, of Middletown, RI; his grandson, Carter Stephen White; and many nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his brothers and sister, John C. White, James C. White, Eugene C. White, Alfred C. White and Mary G. Phillips.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 4-7 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.His funeral will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 8 am from Memorial Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway at Vernon Avenue, Newport, RI.Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd., Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886 or to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society of RI, 1210 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920.
