George W. Correia, 58, of 3 Continental Drive, Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.He was the husband of Sandra Makeever Correia.Born in Newport, RI on March 1, 1951, he was the son of the late George and Gertrude Watson Correia. Mr. Correia graduated from Rogers High School where he played in the school band. He served in the United States Army in Germany before using his experiences to segue into his 37 year career as a U.S Postal Carrier. He retired in October of 2008. George was a talented drummer who spent much of his time performing in local area bands. He especially loved sharing his musical knowledge with people, it wasnt rare for him to make tapes or cds weekly for his friends and co-workers. Many of his customers will remember George the Mailman as being perpetually jolly and quick with a helping hand, he knew almost all of the people on his route by name. His family and friends will remember his quick wit, ability to make people laugh, his countless quotes, trivia questions, literary references and his excellent narrative skills.Besides his wife of 25 years, he is survived by his sons Christopher Correia of Watertown, MA and Kyle Correia of Newport, RI, and his sisters Eleanor Dube and Lynda Correia both of Florida. His funeral will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, 12:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 6, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 in the funeral home.Donations in his memory may be made to the Robert Potter League, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
