Georgia Gianarakos "Gee Gee" Young passed away peacefully in her home in Newport, RI surrounded by her family early Friday morning, July 25, 2014.She was the daughter of Peter Gianarakos and Maria Cotsifakos Gianarakos who immigrated to the United States early in the 1900's from Mani, Greece.Shortly after she was born, her mother passed away and she and her brother, Leonidas, were adopted by the Apostolakos Family of Washington, DC. Georgia graduated from Central High School in Washington, DC as valedictorian of her class. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Mensa. She directed and performed in plays throughout high school. She was the recipient of the Gold Alumni Award for performing arts. She attended Wilson Teachers College with a full scholarship. Throughout her life, she was very close to the Greek Orthodox Church. She wrote and directed plays in Greek and was a student of Greek History mentored by Father Thomas Daniels. During the Second World War, she was employed by the War Department in research and development. In her mid-twenties, she left Washington, DC to marry a Naval Officer and Pilot Charles T. Young (Yeanopoulos). They settled in Newport, RI to raise their family. She worked as a Librarian at Bethesda Naval Hospital and later at the Naval War College in Newport, RI.She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Theodore Young, her parents and her brother. She is survived by her daughter, Marina Vasileke Young-Kelly and her sons, Theodore James Young and Chris Charles Young; a nephew, Peter Jennings; five grandchildren, Sandra Press, Stephanie Hazan, Nicole Young, Rachael Millik and Ryan Hazinakis; two great-grandchildren, Sam and Zoe Hazan; a sister-in-law, Bess Jex; a step-sister, Xanithippe Anestos; and her loving caregiver, Veronica Perry.Calling hours will be held on Monday, July, 28 2014 from 4 to 7 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, July, 29, 2014 at 10 am in St. Spyridon Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport, RI.
