Dr. Gerald F. Rogers, DMD, of 221 Corey Lane, Middletown, RI, formerly of Ayrault Street, Newport, died on April 19, 2008, at South County Hospital, following a brief illness, and a life well-lived.He was the husband of the late Mary Regina McCarthy Rogers. Born in Newport, on October 2, 1920, he was the son of the late Gerald and Catherine Tracy Rogers.Dr. Rogers served in the United States Navy during World War II, retiring as Lt. Commander. Dr. Rogers attended Hazard Memorial grammar school, graduated from De La Salle Academy in 1937; he graduated from Providence College in 1941 and from Tufts College Dental School. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Serra Club, and the Newport and State of RI Dental Associations. Dr. Rogers was Chairman of the Board of Commissioners at the Henderson Home for the Aged from 1990 to 2000. He served as President of the Newport County Dental Society and Trustee of the RI State Dental Society. He was also a member of the Dental Staff at Newport Hospital and a member of the Board of Health. Dr. Rogers received the Providence College Service to Alumni Faithful Friar Award on May 18th 1979, and served on the National Alumni Board of Governors at the College. He was also a lector, Eucharistic minister, and long-time communicant of St. Josephs Church. His kind and jovial personality brought comfort and solace to many through his volunteer work with the Visiting Nurse Association/ Hospice of Newport County. A member of Wanumetonomy Country Club, Dr. Rogers enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his sister, Mary Rogers Beckert of Mansfield Center, CT, and brother John E. Rogers of Middletown; also by his sons Gerald F. Rogers of Westerly, RI, Michael J. Rogers and his wife Mary-Ellen Sposato Rogers of Wethersfield, CT and Westerly, RI, Paul G. Rogers and his fiancee Jeannine Arruda of Fall River, MA, Peter G. Rogers of Barrington, RI, his grandchildren Gerald Rogers IV, Kelley Rogers, Kevin Rogers, Michael Rogers, Jr. S.J., Francis Rogers, Mary-Kathryn Rogers, Peter Rogers, Jr., Karen Rogers, and Tracey Rogers, mother of his two great-grandchildren, Madison and Taylor. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dr. Rogers life at his funeral, which will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 9:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am, in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.Donations in his memory may be made to Providence College, 549 River Avenue, Providence, RI 02918-0001 for a memorial in his name, or to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 143 Main St, Wakefield, RI 02879.
