Geraldine A. Smith Kelly, 79, of Hall Avenue, Newport, RI, died Friday, July 18, 2008 at the John Clarke Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Middletown.She was the wife of Frederick M. Kelly.Born in Providence, RI on September 13, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen Holden Smith.Mrs. Kelly was a home health aide for various families in the Newport area. She was a member of St. Pauls Methodist Church in Newport where she cared for the children in the nursery for close to fifty years which was recently dedicated in her name. A longtime member of Newport In Bloom, she enjoyed her flower gardens and had been awarded numerous prizes over the years. Also an avid walker, Mrs. Kelly was a familiar figure walking through Newport everyday.In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by two sons, Kenneth C. Kelly and his wife Barbara of Newport, RI and Paul A. Kelly and his wife Nancy of Middletown, RI; a daughter, Nancy E. La Chance and her husband Gordon of Newport, RI; a sister, Bernice Gage of Middletown, RI; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.She was the sister of the late Edward and Albert Smith and Margaret Cottrell.Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 11 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 23, 2008 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.Donations in her memory may be made to Odyssey Healthcare, 100 Quaker Lane, Suite 2, Warwick, RI 02886 or to a Health Care Agency of your choice.
