Middletown, RI - Gertrude Trudy Emeline Gourgas 90, a resident of the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI, formerly of 93 Reservoir Road, Middletown. Died Saturday, May 12, 2007 in the Grand Islander. Born in Wilmington, DE in 1916, she was the daughter of the late Rollin Terry and Gertrude Bent Read. Trudy has been a resident of Middletown since 1978. She attended Westerly High School, Westerly, RI, Dana Hall School in Wellesley, MA and Stratford Hall in Danville, VA, Colby Junior College in New London, NH and the Rhode Island School of Design. She was a driver for the Red Cross during WWII. Trudy was employed as a nursing assistant at nursing homes in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including the Grand Islander. She also provided live-in nursing services for patients throughout New England. Trudy was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Milton, MA and more recently attended the United Congregational Church in Middletown. She loved nature, children and animals. She was an artist, a gardener, a devoted mother, a loving aunt, a friend and life long student. Although preceeded in death by her husband John Mark Gourgas and her youngest sister Charlotte M. Morris, Trudy is survived by daughter Trudy A. Gourgas of Hotsprings Village, AR, daughter Joan M. Gourgas of Middletown, RI, sister Elizabeth R. Barto of Windham, ME, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 2:00pm in the United Congregational Church 524 Valley Road Middletown, RI. Burial will be held at a later date at the Milton Cemetery, Milton, MA.In place of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to the Humaine Society of the United States 2100 L Street NW Washington, DC 20037 or to the charity of one?s choice.
