Gertrude F. Correira

Gertrude Correira, 97, of Portsmouth, RI passed on February 22, 2013 at Newport Hospital surrounded by her daughter and grandsons.Born on March 10, 1915 in Middletown, RI one of 14 brothers and sisters, she was married to the late Joseph A. Correira, both owners of the former Newport Nursery on West Main Road in Middletown. She later lived at 799 Jepson Lane in Middletown.Gert and her husband, Joe, had a deep love for each other that lasted as they meet know in heaven. It showed in their family life. They had three children, the late Joseph A. Correira, Jr., the late John D. Correira, and their daughter, Naureen Desmarais with whom she lived with until her passing. She leaves two grandsons, David Desmarais of Portsmouth, RI and Scott Desmarais of North Stonington, CT, and many great-grandchildren.Gert was known for her kind heart and compassion for family and friends. She was a great business partner with her husband and a deeply spiritual woman. She was also know for all the vegetables and shrubs they grew and famous for the piled high October pumpkins at their stand on West Main Road. Everyone enjoyed her great cooking tips and incredible recipes that she shared with all. In her retirement, she loved cross-stitching, cooking shows, reading the newspaper and magazines, eating out, the Five O'clock News and all the time she spent with her family.
