Gertrude N. Gavin

Newport, RI - Gertrude N. Gavin, 85, of 5 Barbara Street Newport, died Friday, January 21, 2005 at Morton Hospital Taunton, MA. She was the wife of the late Capt. James F. Gavin. Born in Albany, NY on August 15, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Philip Newman and Gertrude Clark Newman. Gertrude graduated from Vincentian HS in Albany NY and went on to work for the local phone company in Albany. She married James Gavin on January 24, 1942 and traveled with him through his navy career. She was a member of St. Josephs Church in Newport. She loved caring for her children and grandchildren. She is survived by two sons James Gavin Jr of The Villages, FL, and Kevin P. Gavin of Portsmouth, RI, three daughters Judith Gleason of Charlestown, RI, Kathleen Randall of Taunton, MA, and Karen Gavin of Taunton, MA, and twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Kathleen Ellis and Jean Malone.Her funeral will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 9:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport.
