Middletown, RI - Gertrude Smith Sims, 86, of Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI, died surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late George E. Sims. Born in Newport, RI on May 14, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Chancey Perkins and Martha Smith Johnson.Gertrude lived in Newport most of her life, formerly on Tilden Ave and Callendar Avenue. During World War II, she worked at the Naval Torpedo Station on Goat Island. She also worked at Valet Dry Cleaners for several years. Most of her career was as a matron at Rogers High School. Gert volunteered at Newport Child and Family Services Day Care Center. She was a member and volunteer of the Park Holm Senior Center. She enjoyed spending time her family, collecting jewelry and playing Bingo. She is survived by her sons, David Sims of Needham, M; Robert Turner of Middletown, RI, and George Sims of Spencer, OK, her daughters Meredith Jones of Dallas, TX and Nadine Sims of Newport, RI, her sisters Gloria Sykes of Newport, RI and Barbara Miller of Middletown, RI and Emma Williams of SC, her brother Reginald Johnson of Chicago, IL, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her sister Mary Trent, and her brothers Robert Johnson and William H. Perkins. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 10:00-11:00am, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am in the funeral home.
