Gladys H. (Parmenter) Lawton Fritz, 99, of Blenheim-Newport formerly of Indian Ave. and Gibbs Ave. died Thursday, December 13, 2012. She was the wife of the late George W. Lawton and J. Raymond Fritz. Born June 16, 1913 in Newport, RI she was the daughter of the late Bruce M. and Catherine (Harvey) Parmenter. Gladys volunteered at many local organizations including The American Red Cross, Girls Scouts, Swinburne School, Townsend Aid, and The Ladies Aid Society. She was a Republican presidential delegate in the 1930's, a Newport Preservation Society guide at the Breakers and an avid bridge player. She was a graduate of American International College. She is survived by her daughters, Susan B. Lawton and Gay E. Lawton both of Portsmouth, RI, her stepdaughter Betsy Davis of Littleton, CO, eight grandchildren, Lorrie Burns of Portsmouth, John Taylor of CA, Heather Lawton of FL, Andrew Lawton of GA, Chandra Hosier of FL, Sarah Basto of NV, Thayne Davis of CO and Alisa Davis of UT and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Captain Roy Owen Lawton, sister of the late Donald Parmenter, stepmother of the late Dr. Barbara Fritz and grandmother of the late William Blue McLaughlin. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at 1pm, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport, RI. Burial will be private.
