Gladys N. Cushman

Portsmouth, RI - Gladys N. Farnsworth Cushman, 101, of Forest Farm Health Care Center, formerly of 27 Cornell Drive, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Forest Farm Middletown, RI.She was the former wife of the late Frank H. Cushman, who died in 1969. Born in Cavandish, VT on March 31, 1903, she was the daughter of Fred B. and Nellie Green Farnsworth.Mrs. Cushman was raised in Springfield, VT and moved to Portsmouth, RI with her husband and daughter in 1935. She worked for several years at the Boston Store in Newport, until 1959 when she and her family founded the Ceramic teaching and wholesale business called the Ceram-Art Studio in Portsmouth. The business closed in 1980. Mrs. Cushman was a 50 year member of Eureka Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member and Past President of the Forever Young Club of Portsmouth, a member of the Portsmouth Senior Center and a founding member of the Island Senior Chorus. She donated hundreds of hats and hand knitted mittens to the RSVP for the Head Stare Program and crocheted hundreds of cat pads for the cat cages at the Potter League for Animals in Middletown, RI. She is survived by her daughter Lorraine Vermillion of Portsmouth, RI, a niece Shirley Petraska of Windsor, VT, three great nephews Thomas and Daniel Petraska both of Chester, VT and Leonard Petraska of Marathon, FL and several great great nieces and nephews.She was also sister of the late Perley, Earl and Henry Farnsworth.A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004, at 2:00pm, in Calvary United Methodist Church, Turner And Wyatt Roads, Middletown. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, VT.
